EcoLux☆Lifestyle: ‘Dinner with a View’ Domes Delight Diners
Diners no longer want a meal; they want an experience, a delicious meal that involves more than just sitting down and eating. Dinner with a View, the hugely popular dinner in a dome, which first launched in Toronto, finally made its way to the West Coast. Laid out along the shore of Ambleside Beach in West Vancouver, enjoy all the views of outdoor dining while staying safe from the elements.

Dinner with a View

As you approach the event, you are welcomed by glowing bubbles appearing on the horizon; there are a couple of dozen dispersed in the grass. After checking in, you are ushered to a cozy cocktail tent done up with strings of lights and greenery to sip botanical cocktails.

At dinner time, you are fetched from the cocktail sanctuary. Each dome seats six and is expertly decorated. Using lighting, textiles, and plants inspired by ecosystems around the world, desert tundra, lush,  grasslands, as well as boreal and arid forests are represented. Upon getting seated, the hostess explains that each dome is put together by hand. These domes are transported from venue to venue and will eventually leave Vancouver to delight diners elsewhere.

Local Menu

Dinner was a three-course plant-based meal. Inspired by the wilds of BC, Chef Paul Moran enlisted his family and friends to help forage ingredients. The remainder was pulled from cellars and farms across the Fraser Valley, as well as Cranbrook, Bamfield, and Tofino.

First to arrive was a beetroot salad. The bitter earthy flavour of the beets was complemented by sweet apples and crunchy sunchoke chips. For the main, ginger and soy glazed crispy tofu plated carefully on a bed of strikingly black forbidden rice was brought to the table. To wrap up the experience was a dessert that delightfully refreshing and light: vanilla and lime marinated pineapple, topped with coconut mousse, and mint leaves.

Experiential Dining

Dining is no longer just about the food; diners want to experience something unique and social media worthy. Events such as Dinner in the Sky offered guests two dining options: ‘Sweet and Savoury’ or ‘Dinner in the Sky’ to choose from. It operated in 2017 and 2018, and though there is no indication of when the event will return, it was located in West Vancouver or, more specifically, suspended 100-feet above West Vancouver! A classic Vancouver dining experience is Diner en Blanc. Thousands of white-clad Vancouverites converge upon a secret location for the largest and most glamourous picnic of the summer.

Dinner with a View Proves its More Than a Trend

One could call experiential dining a trend, but with the popularity of such events, it is more likely an indicator that people want more from their outings. Dinner with a View will be heading to Washington and Boston next, and like every summer, Diner en Blanc will return. What dining experience will rise to take the culinary world – and Instagram – by storm next?
