Back in 2019, Aldo launched its first sustainable product line, RPPL. These innovative sneakers are made up of recycled plastic water bottles and BLOOM Foam, a material developed using lake algae biomass. Now, bringing some good news to every shoe-lovers’ 2020, the brand is continuing their strides towards sustainability with a new program, Aldo Love Planet, under which the ever-expanding range of sustainable shoes and accessories will carry on growing.

Firmly planted in the realm of trendy, Aldo offers up-to-the-minute fashion footwear. To the conscious shopper, trendy tends to be synonymous with waste, but sometimes sustainable clothes look a tad too sustainable. For those who want to shop sustainably but still look Insta-ready, the first offerings available as part of Aldo Love Planet are here to fill the void.

Futuristic looking strappy heels, stylish sock boots, the ever-popular chunky sneaker, versatile derby sneakers, and edgy combat boots are here to give waste that would have otherwise been discarded a new purpose. RPPL also is born again in its third generation of sneaker, RPPL Clear. To make all this innovation possible, Aldo has made innovations to the materials they use. In this collection, you will find recycled neoprene, traceable leather, recycled jersey, knit made of recycled plastic bottles, and something completely new – CleanStep sole technology.

Old Materials, New Trick

Though the stylish designs and affordable prices are what bring you through the door, they are hardly the star of the show. Similarly to the BLOOM Foam used in RPPL sneakers, CleanStep sole technology makes use of the algae biomass. Algae is naturally occurring in bodies of water, but when these begin to overgrow, they can starve the waters they inhabit of oxygen. To incorporate this into CleanStep, algae is harvested and dried down into flakes. It is the ground into a powder that can be used in production. The material uses a 50/50 mixture of algae and thermoplastic rubber. The results of this material, besides super comfy soles, are cleaner waterways, CO2 is prevented from entering the atmosphere, and thousands of pounds of waste is diverted from landfills.
