We have had almost a week to digest the gorgeousness that was the 76th Golden Globe Awards! While we may not remember who won the prestigious awards chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the divine Valentino that Lady Gaga wafted in wearing will stay in our memories for a very long time. In periwinkle sateen, the strapless gown embodied glamour with puffed off-the-shoulder sleeves and a massive train. When asked about the Judy Garland A Star is Born reference; Lady Gaga played coy.

As the annual event that kicks off what is known as Awards Season (there are 30 awards based events in two months) which is punctuated by the heavy-hitters: Critics’ Choice, Grammy’s, and Academy Awards, this evening sets the tone for the weeks to come.

All White – All Night

Most often associated with bridal, it seemed strange to see bright-white does on the red carpet. The choice of these three leading ladies to wear it in the middle of winter, over winter-white or off-white, was daring. Sandra Oh, co-host and Canadian sweetheart (perhaps most well-known for her Grey’s Anatomy role) shone in her Versace with ruched bodice and tulip train. 1980s screen star Jamie Lee Curtis glammed it up in Alexander Wang with strong shoulders, thigh-revealing slit, and a touch of bodice bling. Judith Light, recently seen in Law & Order: SVU, shakes off all the winter blues in this stunningly modest Tom & Lorenzo gown.

Never Boring in Black

As a former go-to of stars on red carpets everywhere, black is showing up less and less due to the explosion of interest in patterns, colour, and textures. With more luxury designers jostling for attention, even those designing in black have veered away from sleek elegance and towards new silhouettes, volume, and embellishments.

The ‘Beautiful Boy’ of 2018, Timothee Chalamet had tongues wagging in his sequined Louis Vuitton harness. These relatively tiny strips of shiny bits almost stole the show! Francia Raisa flouted proportion in this Malon Breton custom piece and proved she is nothing like her college-aged Grown-ish character. Jodie Comer ‘killed it’ in this Ralph & Russo stunner. Elegant with playful elements like the lace choker, it was perfectly complementary to her Villanelle character – everyone’s favourite psychopathic BFF from Killing Eve.

Sophisticated in Solids

Making a statement in solids takes confidence as the designer who creates your dress must know your body like their own. Every drape, ruche, and seam must be perfection. For Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has never had a bad fashion day, slayed in this emerald green Elie Saab Haute Couture. Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan’s gown saw the designers at Valentino utilizing their signature volume a second time that night (see Lady Gaga) look to create a voluminous overskirt for shorts. Dakota Fanning, in Armani Privé, looked every inch an ethereal ice Queen draped in diamonds.

Slinky in Sequins

Can we start with the iconic Regina King in the Alberta Ferretti dress?! This stunning custom creation features pink sequins with banded detailing along the sides. The strapless silhouette is just incredible. Although she did not win a Golden Globe for either of her two nominations, we voted this as the best look of the evening. Nicole Kidman, in Michael Kors Collection, appeared as fluid and glossy as our favourite cranberry lippy. Spectacular! In Gucci chainmail, Saoirse (seer-sha) Ronan, take the plunge and it pays off with a truly unique look with the lining creating an illusion of nudity where none exists.

Un-Tulle the End of Time

It may have been Giambattista Valli who single-handedly elevated tulle from prom dress status in 2015 when Rihanna hit the Grammy’s red carpet in that legendary delicious pink cupcake dress. At the Golden Globe’s, Vera Wang dressed both Alison Brie (M) and Constance Wu (R) in frothy confections, while Kiki Layne (L) wore blush pink Dior Haute Couture. We cannot help but notice the similarity between Kiki and Constance’s dresses, both in bodice construction and full waist-to-floor skirts. Hhmmmm…

All Hail the Risk Takers

Actress and model Indya Moore wore Louis Vuitton Spring 2019 on the red carpet, and while it could have easily been mistaken for eco-friendly pop-can pull-tab mesh, it was a hit with its futuristic vibe in silver open weave material and exaggerated shoulders. Singer-actress Sophia Carson brought the drama in black/white with a pop of red lippy to the red carpet in Giambattista Valli Fall 2018 Haute Couture. Definitely, a fresh silhouette from an up-and-comer known for her ‘princess moments.’ The Grand Dame herself, Glenn Close, was awarded her first Golden Globe in this incredible black velvet Armani Privé cape dress that drew attention not only to her beautiful face, but her stature, strength, and elegance.
