EcoLux☆Lifestyle: The Red Carpet of the 2019 Academy Awards

As the lights faded in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, images of the dresses that graced the red carpet of the 2019 Academy Awards were beginning their digital journey around the world. Social media and the late-night news were abuzz with the beautifully constructed gowns worn by our favourite film stars.

Last week, we highlighted the most memorable gowns to grace the red carpet from the past 25 years. Today let’s recount the looks that captured the essence of the Oscars elegance and glamour, and truly reflected the celebration of the year.

Not Your Average Little Black Dress!

We could almost present these two stunning looks like a ‘who wore it better’ challenge. Lady Gaga in a signature Alexander McQueen laden with an immense 128.54-carat yellow diamond pendant by Tiffany & Co. or Billy Porter in a custom Christian Siriano velvet tuxedo. Honestly, we cannot decide!

Variations on a Theme

These three stunning ladies show the diversity of style present every year at the Academy Awards. Ashley Graham created a swoon-worthy moment in this Old Hollywood inspired figure-hugging Zac PosenAmy Poehler nailed the classic men’s wear for women chic right down to the ruffled blouse in Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition, and Allison Janney chose a svelte navel-gazing Pamella Roland dress with Chopard jewelry with a Roger Vivier clutch. Black will always be the new black!

Passionate About Pink

Over a dozen big-name celebrities chose pink this year (including the luscious velvet tuxedo-wearing Jason Momoa), and they did it in such different ways. These three women are all rocking pink in three different shades and styles. Dame Helen Mirren, forever a style icon, chose an A-line Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown in layers of multi-coloured tulle for a structured and flattering silhouette. Kacey Musgrave is continuing her love-affair with Giambattista Valli Couture in even more tulle but in the softest bubble gum pink. Sarah Paulson wears a voluminous cut-out dress by up-and-comer Brandon Maxwell with a dusting of diamonds on her neck. Millennials may think they invented pink, but these three truly owned it!

Glamorous Couples Goals

We have run out of fingers to count the number of times Jennifer Lopez has stolen the spotlight at red carpet events. Iconic designer Tom Ford dressed this power couple impeccably and was wise to classically attire Alex Rodriguez in a white tuxedo, although a jacket in the ‘broken glass’ fabric would have been ah-mazing!

Radiant in Red

It is decidedly difficult to pull off a red gown on the red carpet – either you blend in or clash completely – so if you are going to risk it, do like these two did and go big. Both of these dresses have in common an exposed shoulder, ruffles, and thigh-high slit. Black Panther’s Hannah Beachler is almost swallowed in delicious layers in this Rami Al Ali dress, and Jennifer Hudson is all smiles in this extraordinary Elie Saab Couture with its gorgeous draping and sophisticated neckline. These two gorgeous looks distract from the background and, anyways who is even looking at the carpet now?

All About the Train

Oh, to be invited to an event where wearing a dress with a train is perfectly acceptable! Molly Sims wows in this sequined Zuhair Murad Couture with its cut-outs and lush embroidery. Winner of the first award of the evening, Regina King with her Best Supporting Actress Oscar was radiant in this Oscar de la Renta gown with Chopard jewelry. Although the dress is free of embellishments, the hip detail and the train, give it all the drama it needs.

Each year the stars bring it to the Oscars! This year’s nominees and winners were quick to hype the uniqueness of their choices with Laura Harrier’s Louis Vuittondress had every element sustainably sourced, whereas Glenn Close (header image) chose a Carolina Ferrera gold metallic confection weighing 42 lbs and with 4-million beads. From one extreme to another and each year, we sacrifice our evening to bask in the beauty of this divine red carpet runway.
