(Sooo, asking for a friend) Over the past two years of working from home, is there anyone who hasn’t developed a fondness for the iconic Canada Post truck? Just knowing a package has arrived and is just minutes from my hands is sometimes too exciting! On go my slippers and hoodie, pile my hair up in a scrunchy, and the sprint to the door commences.
As an online shopper, I cherish thoughtful and attractive packaging. So recently, when I received a delivery from the Brooklyn-born brand Amika, I was left speechless! The adorable pink and orange pizza box opened up to something almost as yummy as the famous Italian dish: natural hair care! This seemingly unusual choice of branding pays tribute to the ‘love story between pizza And New Yorkers.’ Not only is their packaging easy to love, but the brand as a whole will easily earn your affection. The core of the company revolves around the importance of ethics, friendship, and creativity.
Amika: The Language of Community
Founded in 2007 by a collective of creatives, the brand encompasses the passion of individual artists for their trades as well as their heart for diversity. They draw inspiration from their city and its people, “where creativity and culture are the way of life.” The word itself, Amika, means friend, or friendly in Esperanto. The artificial language developed in the late 1800s was meant to bring people together by becoming an international second language for all. This name perfectly encompasses the heart and direction of the brand and its products. All hair is welcome with 10 unique collections curated to suit every hair texture and style.
Amika: A Friend To The Planet
The brand was established as cruelty-free even before it was trendy, and has held Leaping Bunny certification for a long time. It is also EU certified, and vegan, meaning they care about every ingredient that comes into contact with your hair. The products are all free-from sulphates, parabens, phthalates, or other harsh chemicals that could impact your health and the planet.
The star ingredient used in their products, sea buckthorn, is sustainably and fair-trade sourced from Tibet. This super-fruit is one of the only plant-based sources of omega-7 in the world, flush with antioxidants, and vitamins C and A. The combination of these nutrients makes it wonderful for optimal scalp and strand hydration. Every product bottle is also 100% recyclable through TerraCycle.
The Wizard / Detangling Primer: The perfect pre-game before detangling or styling. This comforting vanilla mist meets all your post-shower needs. It not only helps brush out the most unruly of knots but protects hair against heat damage up to 450F. Mist it through wet or dry hair, then style as usual.
Normcore / Signature Shampoo: This soft citrus blend with a tangy and sweet aroma is nothing short of glorious. The intricately designed orange cylinder bottle contains the perfect cocktail of vitamins and antioxidants for your hair.
Soulfood / Nourishing Mask: See shiny and silky results in no time with this rich nourishing mask! The antioxidants and nutrients in this blend are a must-have for the health of your locks. This fragrant and fruity concoction can be used as a weekly or daily treatment, depending on your individual needs.
